Bug Description

I'm trying Kubuntu 12.04 on a notebook DELL XPS 1340. I've installed the version downloaded from the Kubuntu website and that was ok. But when I upgraded the kernel to version "3.2.0-20" the system didn't started up. Since that upgrade I have to choose the older kernel version on GRUB to get the system up. Tonight I installed the new version (3.2.0-21) holpiing the problem would be solved. Unfortunately I am getting the same error. Can anyone help me? Thanks...

The error only occurs when I try to start the system with the upgraded kernels and in these cases I can't run the command. When I start the system with the old kernel image, the command (apport-collect 969755) don't return any error.

Brad Figg (brad-figg) wrote : Test with newer development kernel (3.2.0-21.34)

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

You can update to the latest development kernel by simply running the following commands in a terminal window:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

If you want this bot to quit automatically requesting kernel tests, add a tag named: bot-stop-nagging.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

Eng Bruno Santana, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. If found in the upstream kernel, the next step is to perform a kernel bisect to identify the offending commit. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone..
I'll accomplish the tests suggested over the weekend, when I can devote some time for it. I ask you to wait for my updates to give continuity to repair this bug. Thank you for listening,

I am having the same issue. Dell XPS 1340. The problem started with Kernel 3.0.0.18 (3.0.0.17 works). Upgraded and tried 3.2.0-22.35 and 3.3.1-precise both panic at boot. As a test I burned a clean beta2 amd64 DVD, and tried to boot off that to eliminate any configuration issues, and I still get the kernel panic. Right now booting off the 3.0.0.17 kernel is my only working solution. I have been trying to troubleshoot, unfortunately I can't seem to get a log of the error and the panic screen scrolls to a point that is extraordinarily unhelpful. I will keep trying to figure it out, just wanted to +1 this issue, and share what I knew so far.

Richard Kent Jordan, unfortunately +1'ing kernel bugs is not terribly helpful. However, what would be is if you executed the following at the Terminal, and feel free to subscribe me to it:

Thanks!

Well, I can't run that under any of the kernels that panic on boot (obviously). If I try and run it under the 3.0.0.17 kernel, I get:
The problem cannot be reported:
This is not an official Ubuntu package. Please remove any third party package and try again.
I can add that I upgraded to 3.2.0-23.25. Same issue. Freezes on boot, with the light on the Caps Lock key blinking.

Bruno Santana, from the picture you posted, it seems a problem with ite-cir, that we recently handled (bug 984387). Can you try installing the kernel from http://people.canonical.com/~henrix/lp984387-postponeirq/amd64/ and see if the issue still occurs?

Also, you can try workaround the issue, disabling or removing ite-cir module.
