To be exact, I tried to write 1 when the value was 0 and vice versa. In both cases the machine locked up.

I already read a bit about the problem on the net, so I think I have a basic idea of what you mean about the problem behind.

Albeit not satisfying, at least the intel_backlight interface works after resume, and I usually don't change the brightness every few minutes. Therefore I can live with the workaround mentioned. Furthermore I tried to work around with the acpi_backlight=vendor kernel parameter. To my surprise with this parameter set intel_backlight seems to be used behind the scenes when the Fn-F6/7 keys are pressed. But after resume the backlight stayed off, hence I don't followed this approach any further.
