Bug Description

I bought a TP-Link WN 350GD PCI Wifi Card with an Atheros chip. It worked well on Natty and Oneiric, until a few weeks ago (probably after a kernel upgrade) when it started acting funky. It's connected to the router alright, but the internet's either disconnected, or very very slow - slower than dialup.
Signal strength's good at 77%, authenticated via WPA2-Personal.

I'm using both LAN and Wireless connections (LAN's routing is enabled) since LAN connection's for the internal network, while the wireless connection's for the Internet. I can usually scan and ping other devices/workstations connected wirelessly but not anymore. Every now and then, the wifi card would allow me to connect to a website at 15K-20Kbps, but it'll disconnect soon after. Syslog shows that the card keeps on re-authenticating to the network. Something that does not happen on my TP-Link USB Wifi with Ralink chipset - and they're averaging at 65%-75% signal strength.

I've already tried booting to v2.6.39, v3.0.0-15, and v3.2.1 (which I got from kernel.ubuntu.com for precise pangolin) kernels with no success.
I've even tried compiling compat-wireless by following the instructions on http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download#Directly_downloading_the_tarball
I've also commented out ath_pci from /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ath_pci.conf
all with the same result.

I haven't tried using wicd as suggested in the forum since it doesn't support simultaneous connections

So is this an ath5k bug? or did my pci wifi card went south. I can't replace it at the moment since this is a company workstation and might take a while to get a replacement card. By the way, the workstation I'm using is a dev workstation and a web/database/ntpd server for our prototypes which means it's on 24/7.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . If possible, please test the latest v3.2 kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel version 3.2-rc1 fixed the issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.2-rc1'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'. If you believe this bug does not require upstream testing, please add the tag: 'kernel-upstream-testing-not-needed'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

apport-collect won't allow me to attach my system details/logs to this bug when using a kernel not downloaded from the repo. but I still have the same issue with v3.2.0

I have the same issue with an Ubuntu 11.10 x64 and Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43227 802.11b/g/n.
Sometimes it works alright but sometimes it connects to the wireless router but there is no internet connection. In the same time I do have connection with another device so it's not the router's fault. Win7 works with the same laptop so it's not the laptop's fault either.

On natty I had this issue after upgrading from 2.6.38-10-generic. -11 and -13 show this problem. At the moment I'm booting up in -10 until this bug is fixed.

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org [1]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

If you are comfortable with opening a bug upstream, It would be great if you can report back the upstream bug number in this bug report. That will allow us to link this bug to the upstream report.

I have the same issue here with an Atheros AR9285 wifi. A workaround is to turn wireless on and off via the nm-applet switch (desktop computer without real hw killswitch).

It turned out that it was the fault of my router. The wifi connection was very hectic/bad with other devices too. Then I changed the router wifi setting to 802.11g instead of n and now it's working fine. I have a TP-link 1043ND router with OpenWRT backfire on it.

Dax Solomon Umaming, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Adam Niedling, if one is using Xubuntu (which I do), it actually is valid. Despite this, please do not comment here further as you are not the original reporter. If you have a bug in Ubuntu, the Ubuntu Kernel team, Ubuntu Bug Control team, and Ubuntu Bug Squad would like you to please file a new report by executing the following in a terminal while booted into a Ubuntu repository kernel (not a mainline one) via:
ubuntu-bug linux

For more on this, please read the official Ubuntu documentation:
Ubuntu Bug Control and Ubuntu Bug Squad: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/BestPractices#X.2BAC8-Reporting.Focus_on_One_Issue

Please note, not filing a new report would delay your problem being addressed as quickly as possible.

After reading the above documentation in it's entirety, if you have further questions or comments, you are welcome to redirect them to the appropriate mailing list or forum via http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/mailinglists , or you may contact me directly.

Hello Christopher. I'm afraid I already gave up with this hardware and I can no longer test it with the latest release and/or kernel at the moment. I still have the PCI card at the office though, but it might take a while before I can report back with the result. Thanks for taking the time to check on this bug.
Cheers

I'm still on LTS Precise on v3.4, I got it working right after I reinstalled the card but it soon dropped the internet after about 30mins while still connected to the router.
I just installed v3.12.4, the internet connection seems stable. will wait for a few more hours and report back just to make sure.
