Description: Ubuntu 11.10
Release: 11.10
3.0.0-14-generic-pae #23-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 21 22:07:10 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

on Dell 15R

the monitor went to sleep, and can usually resume correctly though i had closed the lid before resuming the session. upon opening the lid again, the system had restarted, all programs closed and all unsaved info presumably would have been lost (fortunately i had saved earlier)
a number of programs were open, firefox, mendeleydesktop, - both which have their own crash detection and were flagged.

this was the second time in the past week that i had an unexpected crash. i dont vividly recall the details of the first time, but today the system suspends correctly for the most part (just tested a minute ago) other than the latest crash.

i feel like there should be some log of errors in the system

/var/crash is empty
/var/log has a lot of logs, but im not sure where to look
.xsession-errors is quite long full of errors and warnings
