I ran the following sequence in the terminal and this time the dkms stage ran through OK without reporting issues with depmod. Thanks for your help.

sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers-3.0.0-15-generic-pae linux-image-3.0.0-15-generic-pae
