Well, that didn't work for me. The error changed:

[ 2669.784934] usb 7-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 63
[ 2670.504219] usb 7-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 64
[ 2676.850928] usb 6-2.3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 97
[ 2677.681842] hub 6-2:1.0: Cannot enable port 3. Maybe the USB cable is bad?

Now the interesting bit is that this only happens for multi-function devices. In my case, this is happening on two USB card readers (both work fine in Windows; one used to work fine in Ubuntu on this box before I upgraded, the other is brand new). I have no problems with my iPod Nano, webcam, Palm T|X, nor Olympus camera. Some of these are obviously low-speed devices, but the iPod should be using ehci_hcd, and it's working without a problem.

I've also tried multiple cables. Also, the same cable that was used on one of the card readers worked flawlewssly to connect the Olympus camera.
