My bad I will to explain further (but it is effectively only your later suggestion):

Please report in Bug #85488 IF the bug is still there when you use a gutsy live cd or a gutsy install (although just using the live cd will be fine) AND using the workaround described in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/85488/comments/363 resolves the issue.
