I have the same problem on my feisty box:
ls -l:

My mount entry for thr 2gb flash drive is slightly different:

/dev/sde1 on /media/disk type vfat (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,noatime,uid=1000,utf8,shortname=lower)

Many seem to be having this problem
