Bug Description

Wireless card no longer working under Linux 3.0.x after upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10, system is an HP 2000 laptop with Realtek RTL8188CE card.
Hardware switch(driver?) for wireless no longer operates. Under 11.04 with 2.6.38.x kernel functionality was correct (except having to toggle button two times to set to on). The switch never operates, even when booting kernel where it could be invoked with 2.6 kernel transiently before system is fully up. Switching back to 2.6.38 kernel restores operation, with the side effect of suspend not working due to other software/kernel issues (this results in a locked blank screen that can only be fixed by removing all power/battery first).

Workaround for this bug in my case is to blacklist the specific wireless kernel module and fall back on phys0 that was being used in version priro to 11.10.

I just added the following to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and after reboot or unload/reload modules all is well.

# hp wireless issues under 3.x kernel?
blacklist hp_wmi

I did this for two laptops with almost the same specs.

Check and see if you two modules for wifi trying to load and figure out the proper name, not the same as indicated by rfkill necessarily.

Raymond Martin, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Raymond Martin, as per http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=ca&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=5128936#N1026 an update is available for your BIOS (F.47). If you update to this, does it change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Windows is not installed on this computer, so the BIOS upgrade cannot be
installed at this time. The upgrade is indicated as only improving memory
and nothing else on the HP site. Also, when first obtaining this computer a
few Linux Distributions were tried before settling on Ubuntu. The WiFi
worked on those immediately as it did for Ubuntu 11.04 with 2.6.x kernel.
