I have prepared a PPA test kernel for Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric) including a patch which might address the "inverted backlight brightness" problem, but I would like to move discussion of that problem to a more specific bug report:

See my comment #14 in that bug report for the link to the new 'inverted-backlight' test PPA, and enter relevant feedback there.
