I am also having the problem on my Acer Aspire Laptop running Ubuntu 11.10. (Oneiric) since upgrading.
When connected to an external monitor I am able to see something displayed, and can vaguely make out something on the laptop's dark screen, this is when using kernel 3.0.0-13, reverting to kernel 2.9.x-x everything is fine on both monitors.
The strange thing is my emachine netbook works fine and I cant seem to replicate the issue, anyway I am hopeful that a solution can be found soon.
