CD/DVD not detected

I don't know when this started because I don't use the DVD player that often. Possibly after the upgrade to Maverick. The CD/DVD player is working because I have a dual-boot system and it works in XP. The computer will boot from an install CD, but if I tell it to boot from the local hard drive, it no longer detects the CD/DVD player.
