There's a known issue with toshiba_acpi loading on newer models, but that module shouldn't be necessary to control your backlight (and on some models the interface used by toshiba_acpi doesn't allow adjusting the backlight anyway). Backlight control should still be possible via the generic ACPI backlight device. Are you unable to adjust the brightness level at all?

Can you please run 'ubuntu-bug -p linux 850065' in a terminal to attach relevant logs to this bug report? Please also install the fwts package (sudo apt-get install fwts), then run 'sudo fwts --disassemble-aml' and attach the *.dsl files it generates to this bug as well. Thanks!

toshiba_acpi probably isn't going to help. Most newer models I've looked at don't support modifying the brightness level via the interface it uses, only reading it, and yours doesn't appear to be an exception.

Please try the following. First, run these commands:

  cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness
  cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
  cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness
  cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/bl_power

Please provide the output you get from these commands. Then try running

  echo n | tee /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

replacing "n" with various values less than or equal to the number you got from the max_brightness file (you might avoid using 0 in case it turns off the backlight). Does the backlight level change? If not, please attach the output of dmesg after writing the values to the brightness file.

Seth Forshee (sforshee) wrote :

That indicates that the interaction with the bios is okay -- actual_brightness actually fetches the brightness level from the bios, so we can see that the values you write are getting through. But whatever the bios is doing doesn't actually affect the brightness for whatever reason. I'll look at the DSDT some more to see if there are any clues, but right now it looks like your bios is just broken in this respect. You could check to see if there's a bios update for your machine (although it may be difficult to apply unless you're dual-booting Windows).

We can go ahead and try toshiba_acpi, but based on the DSDT I'm pretty sure it isn't going to work either. I've uploaded a dkms package you can install to get a version of toshiba_acpi that should work on your machine. After you install the package and load the module, you should have a new folder /sys/class/backlight/toshiba. Try the same things with adjusting the brightness there and see if it has any effect.

  http://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/lp850065/toshiba-acpi/toshiba-acpi-dkms_0.1_all.deb

It looks like you are using the proprietary nvidia module, and it doesn't appear to be exporting any kind of brightness control (unless it's through their control panel application, but that's not a very good solution anyway). Have you tried the nouveau driver? If it works okay for you then it might give you a working backlight control. It may be worth trying, and if it does work we can get your system using it instead of the ACPI control.

Beyond that, unless I find something in your DSDT, there's probably not anything that can be done. At this point it looks like the brightness control in your bios is just broken.

I'm already using nouveau driver....i've tried dkms package...and bios is up to date...nothing to do...
I have the dual boot...and using windows backlight controll work at all...
About nvidia control pannel i'm just using that for backlight controll...but it's not such a good solution.
I suppose that i have to wait for i seroius bios update!
In any case you was very very kind and i'm realy thankful to you!!

Both times you've attached your logs it shows your using the proprietary nvidia driver, not nouveau. I'm not sure, but I suspect that you can only use the control panel with the proprietary driver as well.

Felipe: I'm still waiting for a definite confirmation that the nouveau's backlight driver doesn't work. If you could ensure that you're using nouveau, then test changing the brightness via the /sys/class/backlight/nv_backlight/brightness file, that would be a big help.

I had the same problem with a Satellite L755 (Intel only, no NVIDIA) and solved it by creating this file:

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Giving it the following:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "card0"
        Driver "intel"
        Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
        BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

After reboot the brightness function keys work! Other posts indicated needing to add acpi_backlight=vendor to grub but I don't seem to need to modify any grub settings. Just the above file solves the problem.
