This is just what I expected, nice job, :-)

I only had a glance at the trace, and found some transfer is very slow,
see below:

The slowest one(maybe) takes about 706ms to transfer only 120K bytes to
your usb mass storage disk:

/*CB: send out WRITE10 command*/
ffff8800b1fb2780 3396606803 S Bo:2:004:2 -115 31 = 55534243 25220000

Also there are other more slow transfers, see [1].

From 1.3 and 1.4, CPU takes long time to get CS, and looks like it is very
odd, maybe some device driver disabled irq for long time, so some
suggestions for you:

- someone reported realtek wifi driver may disable irq for long time
sometime, so please disable your wifi and do the file transfer test to
see if there
are any improvements.

- if no improvements, run the tests below to post the reports:

dd if=/dev/null of=/media/udisk bs=120K count=1K

/media/udisk is the mount point of your usb mass storage disk, please be
careful to do the tests since it may destroy your data in usb disk.

[1], some slow transfers, you can find more in your capture.

there was no improvements even after disabling the realtek wifi so I did
what you told me to do and here is the report

ganesh@ganesh-HCL-ME-Laptop:~$ sudo dd if=/dev/null of=/media/udisk bs=120K

[sudo] password for ganesh:

How did you disable the realtek wifi?

Sorry, maybe you should do the below:

      sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/udisk/tmp oflag=direct bs=120K count=2K,

and /media/udisk is the mount point of your usb disk, still capture
the usbmon log
for the 'dd' test.

Also you can use another usb mass storage to do the same test and see if there
will be any changes.

Yes, do the same as before, just start to capture usbmon first, then run 'dd'.

BTW, your disabling wifi should be good, but it is safe to do with below:

          sudo rmmod r8192*

Hi
I tried to disable the wifi from the comand line
sudo rmmod r8192*
 but i got this message

ganesh@ganesh-HCL-ME-Laptop:~$ sudo rmmod r8192*
[sudo] password for ganesh:
ERROR: Module r8192* does not exist in /proc/modules
ganesh@ganesh-HCL-ME-Laptop:~$

so i disabeled it from the hardware switch (Fn+F11)which didn't improve the
copy time

then i captured the usbmon results which i have attached
then when i ran the 'dd'
which gave this
ganesh@ganesh-HCL-ME-Laptop:~$ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/udisk/tmp
oflag=direct bs=120K count=2K
[sudo] password for ganesh:
dd: opening `/media/udisk/tmp': Not a directory

i also ran ran the old dd command you have given and this is the result
ganesh@ganesh-HCL-ME-Laptop:~$ sudo dd if=/dev/null of=/media/udisk bs=120K
count=1K
0+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes (0 B) copied, 8.262e-06 s, 0.0 kB/s
ganesh@ganesh-HCL-ME-Laptop:~$
funny thing is i dont know what i am doing, i just followed your
instructions
plz suggest

You have to find the mount point of your usb mass storage device by yourself:

   - first you should find the device name by 'dmesg' or other way
   - then run 'mount' to get the matched mount point of your usb mass
storage device.

Ganesh, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

I think I'm getting this one too. USB transfers to flash drives are very slow. Disk Utility reports the various drives I've tried are connected at 480Mb/s, but it's rare to see transfers faster than 60-70Mb/s at best. Sometimes I get the first 300MB very fast followed by very slow and ending with a long pause while the write buffer writes out, sometimes they're just very slow from the start. Doesn't seem to matter if I'm transferring one big file or lots of little files.

Precise, AMD64. Also occurring with bleeding edge kernel (which I'm using because anything younger won't suspend right on my machine), 3.5.0-999-generic #201207280406 SMP Sat Jul 28 08:07:29 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux.

Does not happen on same machine booted into either Windows 7 or Fedora 17 - there I can write at upwards of 250Mb/s easily. Haven't tried latest quantal image yet, but will do shortly.

Toshiba L830-114. lspci -vv -nn attached.

Let me know if there's anything more I can do.
