Bug Description
I have downloaded the Ubuntu 11.10 install/LiveCD from "http://
If I do *not* connect the wired ethernet the netbook freezes when during the boot the system is trying to use the wireless card to access the internet. If I have the wired ethernet connected to the internet, the install *does not* freeze.
This behavior is similar to what happened on Ubuntu 11.04. There, after the system is installed, blacklisting the ethernet driver "atl1c" in /etc/modprobe.
From lspci -k:
Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR8152 v2.0 Fast Ethernet (rev c1). Kernel modules: atl1c
Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01). Kernel driver in use: ath9k. Kernel modules: ath9k
When changing the boot order such that network boot is before other options, and ethernet cable is not connected, the network stays *disconnected* when the "Install" window appears with the options "Try Ubuntu" and "Install Ubuntu". After clicking the "Try Ubuntu" button the round spin indicator (hourglass?) spins but nothing happens for a long time (5 min), but the menu on the right top side is responsive. When I try to connect to the internet with wireless, the system freezes right away.
With ethernet cable connected, the system does not freeze but after selecting "Try Ubuntu" again the round indicator spins but nothing happens. The last command in ps -ef is "lzma -9c". If I select a "classic guest session" in the menu on the top right, a session starts up looking like the "Unity" interface in 11.04.
"uname -a" responds with: Linux ubuntu 3.0-3-generic #4-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 1 08:21:12 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I can then install Ubuntu but the screen says "Welcome to Ubuntu 11.04" instead of "11.10". After install and reboot, I can unplug the ethernet cable with the atl1c module still loaded and wireless starts OK with no freeze (big improvement compared to 11.04). So, it looks as if the kernel or atl1c driver is *not* the same between the LiveCD and the system install?? The system has been running with wireless *without* blacklisting the atl1c driver for about 30min now which was not possible on Ubuntu 11.04.
In Summary:
To install Ubuntu 11.10 on the Acer AO522, a ethernet cable (with network) needs to be connected, then after "Try Ubuntu" a "classic session" needs to be selected in the top right menu, then the system can be installed.
There are two issues for the LiveCD:
1. The atl1c-related issue known from Ubuntu 11.04
2. The Ubuntu session does not start, and the "classic" session has to be selected by hand.
Please let me know what other info is needed to debug.

I reinstalled the system and did an aptitude safe-upgrade (not the aptitude full-upgrade since it would have resulted in dependency problems). Now the system freezes with the atl1c module just like 11.04, and I have to blacklist the module. So, it seems the kernel has not been fixed. I don't know why I could run for 30+ minutes with wireless and the atl1c driver loaded.
