If you're not having issues with T420s, maybe it's due to my SSD, bluetooth, or getting an Intel Wifi module instead of the default thinkpad one.

Which of the T420s models did you get? http://shop.lenovo.com/us/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/t420s

I'm trying to determine what hardware difference is the root cause.
