Thanks for your reply, i've now seen the light ;)

I've added this (sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00) command to the rc.local file and the screen is now starting up.

I can also report that supertuxkart does not cause the screen to go dim again, as reported in another bug regarding this problem, also the brightness controls still do not function as you said.
