Bug Description

This happens on Ubuntu Natty 11.04.
The Laptop gets in Standby/Hibernate Mode right, but only resume with a black screen. Can't type anything or switch to another tty.

WORKAROUND: just replace

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""

in /etc/default/grub with this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.lvds_use_ssc=0"

then run "sudo update-grub"

after rebooting, closing the lit and going to and resume from stand-by works.

I can see a slight change in screen brightness when I force the session to quit with ctrl+alt+backspace. But that's all. I have the same problem when I choose the 'turn off screen' option for the closed lid.

Changing some values in /etc/default/acpi-support also doesn't work (as reported several times...)

Got the same problem here :( I also tried to fix the dsdt-table with a custom kernel which didn't fix anything. Using another kernel as the 2.6.39 results in a black screen directly on boot which can only be worked by by disabling KMS. Is there any chance of getting this to work in the next weeks? Because I'm thinking about sending the device back.

Ok, I found a work-around for this. at least for stand-by.

just replace

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""

in /etc/default/grub with this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.lvds_use_ssc=0"

then run "sudo update-grub"

after rebooting, closing the lit and going to and resume from stand-by works.

hibernate still doesn't work, but there is another error about a too small swap file. seems to be another problem than this.

can someone test this and post the results?

ben, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . However, note you can only test Suspend, not Hibernate, when using a LiveCD. If the issue remains, run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <BUGNUMBER>

Additionally, if you could try to reproduce this with the upstream mainline kernel that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

Hi Christopher!

I've run the apport-collect command on the machine with current ubuntu 11.04 and all updates. Hibernate still doesn't work, but Stand-by does. I think because of my workaround mentioned above.

I will try with ubuntu 12.04 beta 2 later, because I have to install it for testing hibernation, ok?

Forgot to mention: Hibernate doesn't work, only the screen is getting black with the message "PM: Not enough free swap" after that, the ubuntu comes back, but the screen is locked like after the screen saver.

Hi! I've updated to 12.04 with the automatic graphical updater. Since there is no hibernation by default in 12.04, I ran 'sudo pm-hibernate' and I'm getting still the same error: screen is black for 2 seconds and the message "PM: Not enough free swap" appears.

I will attach the sys info from apport in a few seconds. Please let me know, what I can do further!

Thanks,
ben
