Setting the user rights for wireless did not work for me either. I got my HP2133 to work by upgrading the Kernel to 2.6.39.0 and also installed Unity 2-D. I started off running Macbuntu on gnome but for some reason this Kernel set the panel to the legacy Ubuntu 7 style so I went Unity instead

I figure to go up Kernel versions rather than down as there are probably overall additional improvements that make a better experience.
