It could be that I am hit by some other problem, but most of the symptoms seem to be the same.

My experience is that Unity freezes even when "Blank screen" is selected as screensaver.
Whenever the freeze hits I switch to a terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F1, log in and then issue the following commands:

sudo killall -w -s KILL compiz

DISPLAY=:0.0 compiz --replace

and switch back to X with Ctrl-Alt-F7 and see Compiz restarting.

Sometimes I need to repeat this two or three times in a row to succeed.
