I think my problems (#25) can be blamed on a faulty dvd-drive and/or its' dvd-to-usb casing. The same dvd-drive connected to a machine running Windows XP produces the following symptoms:
* Fan starts running at full speed when dvd usb cable is connected.
* The computer won't even complete bios boot and eventually shuts down before attempting to load any OS when the dvd usb cable is connected.
* Dvd playback with PowerDVD is distorted, both sound and image is clipping and very low quality, with frequent frame freezes.

The drive in question is a Dell model DW-Q58A-DM.
Sorry for the confusion.
