I have the same bug, described in:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/729549

And i also have an automatic bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/734708

I am unsure if to mark it as duplicate?

This is an answer to question from ITK in duplicate bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/729549

"ITK: Have you been able to test against the latest kernel?
2.6.38 rc-8 ?"

Installation of Natty has now been possible, but the bug remains.
I have used Natty Desktop i386 ISO dated 17. March.

"cat /proc/version" Returns:
Linux version 2.6.38-6-generic (buildd@rothera) (gcc version 4.5.2 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.5.2-5ubuntu1) ) #34-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 8 14:09:10 UTC 2011

I have to admit that i am unsure what kernel RC it is, and can't seem find a way to find out.
Please advice on how to proceed.

Heya,

From your cat, your system currently has:

"cat /proc/version" Returns:
Linux version 2.6.38-6-generic

Which is release number 38, Release candidate 6.

RC8 was made available:

Mon, 7 Mar 2011
http://lwn.net/Articles/431999/

but it looks like there's a slight lag as

RC 7 only just made it into natty:

Tue Mar 15
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/natty-changes/2011-March/009413.html

Which is my bad, I jumped at the release of it since it mentioned ath9k twice:

ath9k: correct ath9k_hw_set_interrupts
ath9k_htc: Fix an endian issue

If you want to check if RC8 is in natty yet this page has:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux
! A newer version of linux is available for packaging: Linux 2.6.38-rc8

When rc8 is packaged and in the repo's it should look something like this:

The Natty Narwhal (active development) Linux trunk series
 2.6.38-8.XX

Where xx is a number the ubuntu kernel team has assigned.

hope this helps :)

Thanks!
I was starring at the "ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-6.34-generic 2.6.38-rc7" from the apport report, but i guess that the rc7 are the Ubuntu rc number.
It all makes better sense now, thanks a lot!.

So if there are ath9k fixes in rc8, we will just sit tight and wait to see if it solves it.

Thanks. I'm afraid I don't know how and what.
If it will make a difference that I take action to, I will need some help, what to do.

Well it seems my bug is a duplicate.

Been using 11.04 alpha 3 before, quite nice, but crashed when trying to connect to wifi. Moved back to Ubuntu 10.10 everything worked fine, but decided to try out the 2.6.38 kernel http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.38-natty/ it is the same kernel as 11.04, so don't know if it is a ubuntu or kernel bug. When trying to connect to wireless, pc freezes and can't move my mouse.

I'm using an Asus Eee R101(1001px) it has 1.6ghz atom 1gb ram and uses ath9k driver for wifi(but supports only b/g) the chipset is AR2427.

You have the same symptoms?

Hi. -Yes same symptoms.
I have a Asus eee 1005P, also with a AR2427 wireless. I have both 10.10 and 11.04 on it, but only 11.04 has this freezing bug when connecting to wireless network.

This bug, or some form of it affects me too on natty beta, connecting to a wpa network on natty causes the computer to completely freeze, making it impossible to connect to the internet anywhere with a network like this from my netbook.

This bug never appears in 10.10 but always in 11.04 if connecting to unencrypted MOBILE WiFi network of Swisscom in Switzerland. Other networks work mostly.

There's a patch that should fix this bug in 2.6.38.3 "ath9k: Fix kernel panic in AR2427". http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.stable/7414

I couldn't find confirmation to indicate that this patch was already pulled in to the Natty kernel, but it will definitely be there when it updates to 2.6.38.3 (see bug #761134).

When will 2.6.38.3 get in to the natty repositories?

Laurens: Going by the consensus of this thrad <https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2011-April/015366.html> it seems kernel-team don't want to release a new kernel without good reason (with the natty release so soon). That said, seeing as this is a definite regression on previous kernels, is tracked upstream, and has a patch which is part of an upstream stable kernel I suppose we can hope that the relevant patch will get cherry-picked. Otherwise, the patch should be in the first SRU after the natty release. In the meanwhile, .debs of the mainline build are available <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds>

Pardon my ignorant question, but: do people working on the Linux kernel test it on several different machines (including the highly popular Asus EEE PC) before releasing it into production? I'm just surprised a critical bug such as this made it into the Ubuntu & Mint release ISOs.
