This is related to another but I filed, but I wanted debug information to be preserved. As I said in bug #726918, whenever I leave my laptop lid closed for a long enough period of time and power manager settings kick in, the screen locks up, preventing the cursor that I can still move from interacting with any screen elements (and the clock freezes, too.) Now, it appears even leaving the lid left down for a few minutes triggers this issue. Anyways, I hope the extra debug info helps.

I can confirm this is happening to me as well on Asus U35F-X1, core i3. I start the music player, close the lid, and 10 minutes later when I open it back up the desktop is frozen but I can still move the mouse cursor. I cannot switch between applications that are already open. I can switch to console mode with Ctrl+Alt+F1 and issue sudo restart gdm. In power settings I have the screen set to blank when the lid is closed. I am running the Ubuntu Classic desktop 64 bit.

Dell Inspiron 15xx with integrated Intel Graphics, same issue here: closing lid or letting screen blank causes unresponsive UI: mouse moves smoothly but cannot click on any windows or window decorations, nor any unity features. Keyboard unresponsive.

I also have this problem on my Acer Aspire 1410.

Sometimes (less frequently) the screen will also flicker rapidly between black, my background picture, and the expected display (open applications etc).

Does this happen to anyone else?

Inspiron 1525 with Unity, Also will freeze if lid closed for more than 5 seconds, but can move the mouse, and switch to console.
Also important to note, doesn't seem to freeze with I am on an empty desktop. I can have my mail and/or browser open, but as long as I am on a blank desktop, it does not seem to freeze up.
I have not extensively tested this, but seems to be a fact for me.

Same for me, also with an Inspiron 1525. I am midway through composing a document late in the evening. I flip down the laptop's lid, intending to finish the document in bed. I carry the laptop upstairs and flip the lid back up. Everything *appears* as it did before, and I can move my mouse pointer as normal across my screen. But mouse clicks and keyboard events no longer have any effect: the only key that does anything is the power button, which, if held down, shuts down the laptop. With no autosaving set, that means an hour's lost work.

Same problem on Dell Latitude E4200. Seems to work with Metacity, but with Compiz, X output (except the cursor; also input seems to work) freezes on lid close. Exiting early from /etc/acpi/lid.sh does not help. Killing and letting compiz restart helps (seems to need -9), no need to restart the whole X session. Does not reliably freeze, but rather often.

After few tests I see that when I disable gnome-power-manager (by killing process or disabling it in Startup Programs and restarting) screen is not freezing. Unfortunately gnome-power-manager is turning off screen when lid is closed and this will not happen when it's disabled.

For the time being, I go to another tty and do a sudo service gdm restart. However, it's get restarted so everything that was unsaved or unseen won't be able to be recovered.

Killing gnome-power-manager completely has mostly fixed it for me on my HP 6710b, but it's still done the same thing upon two occasions in the past ten days (once about six days ago, once earlier today). I've probably closed the lid for the required length of time 10-15 times in that period. So I don't think that gnome-power-manager is the issue, but is rather just pretty good at triggering it.

And the "sudo gdm restart" technique takes it to the logon screen and says that I'm logged in, but the session dies as soon as it tries to log in to it. (It does the same thing after hibernate the two times I've tried it, too. But I should test it more thoroughly and create another bug report about that; wonder how long it'll take before I get round to it.) Normal "switch user" works, however.
