ubuntu 10.10 freezes randomly

On my Asus 1005px I face random freezes. It happens in the following situations: many times while using google chrome browser, if I do a ad-hoc connection between another pc and use services like squid, samba and ssh. It has happened while using firefox browser too. Sometimes it happens after going in to sleep mode. But it is not limited to the above instances, once it happened when I changed the desktop background. Always it happens randomly. After the freeze recovery options like 'sysrq' key, or 'ctrl+F2' don't work. I have to do cold shutdown.
