I just downloaded and installed the Realtek driver from here (r8168-8.023.00): http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#2
Transferred a few GBs from my file server to test and had no crash - a record! It may be a bit premature, but I'm calling it fixed. So yes - I blame the r8168 module shipped in the distros.
