Same issue here on my Thinkpad R400 w/ Trackpoint & Touchpad. Was not a problem with 10.04 x64, but really annoying on 10.10 x64. Pointer always freeze up several times for several seconds after startup, and freeze randomly later on.

I get messages such as these in syslog when the pointer is freezing up:
psmouse.c: TouchPad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost synchronization, throwing 1 bytes away.
psmouse.c: TouchPad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 1
psmouse.c: issuing reconnect request
