Used to face this problem in Ubuntu 10.10, when I upgraded to 11.04 the problem disappeared. Then I installed Burg and the problem started again. Removing of burg just stopped the display of i915 message. The boot screen and shut-down screen of Ubuntu still appears in low-resolution, 8-bit color. No other problems due to this.
