Bug Description

PATA / IDE CD-ROM are not supported under Linux with this motherboard altough Bios can boot from it.

Booting Ubuntu fails because media cannot be found (=>initramfs prompt)

Running Ubuntu with this motherboard means you cannot access your PATA / IDE CD-ROM drive (no /dev/scd0 node)

The problem seems to come from the fact that the IDE controller is shared with Firewire.

Hi Jonathan,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Seems the controller is not detected by the Kernel on install dvd. (opensuse 11.3 i586 dvd)
Same bug has been reported at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/649182
so this seems to be a generic kernel problem.
Information including lspci, dmesg etc should be the same as for ubuntu bug above

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Try to install from dvd (sata) on pata disk.

It seems there is no upstream support for this device. Please file a bug at bugzilla.kernel.org and link to it here.

Jonathan Ernst, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag.
