Awsome thanks for the more specific udev rule. That's ideal since it would apply to any FreeAgentDesktop, which obviously they all have the same problem.

Also, by now I think I can say the sdparm fix works.

Without rebooting I did the disconnect/reconnect I mentioned, then manually did the sdparm command on /dev/sdh, then did a full system rsync backup of about 300 gigs from a software sata raid0 array to the FreeAgent, which is formatted ext2. I've also done other massive backups to the device like pumping the output of star right to the raw device treating it like a tape. To me that as good as proves I don't have a "lots of traffic" problem.

Then the drive has been untouched for several hours after that backup completed and now I just tried and it's up & working fine. To me that says I no longer have the "drive turns off" problem.

So now I will test the allow_restart possible fix to allow the drive to spin down and spin up gracefully instead of just forcing it to stay spinning all the time. That, with the better udev rule would be the ideal. This enclosure is not one you can swap out drive or fan without basically destroying it, so best to just let it go idle as much as possible.

Thanks again.
