I basically did the same as John ^ - but I used Ramlog (http://www.tremende.com/ramlog/index.htm) - it basically mounts your /var/log as ramdisk and synchronizes the contents when you shut down / start your computer with /var/log.hdd. Playing around with "iotop -oPa" I was able to find some more apps which continuously wrote to my harddisk.
