As I said in my 2010-06-06 comment, the problem seems to have been fixed on my computer a long time ago. At the time, I did remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag as per instructions. I believe my computer has been updated multiple times and I have not encountered any problem since. Even the screen flickering I mention above is gone. If it helps, uname -a gives me:
This post made me aware that my computer is more than 3 years old. It's aging well for a sub $400 machine. Everything is still lightning fast, in huge contrast to some more expensive windows machine I have been forced to use on occasion. Go Ubuntu!
