I am currently running 13.04 and the same problem is still present. It's been with me since 12.04
But now I have discovered a pattern to these freezes: My power cord is always unplugged when Ubuntu freezes.
I have a usage pattern that might have an impact: Whenever the screen saver is starting (the desktop is fading out), I push shift or move my mouse to avoid having to write the password. I know, it's odd behavior since I could just prolong the timeout.
Clearly this has to do with power management, anyway.
