Bug Description
9 times out of 10 on this PC, the boot process fails with a null pointer dereference in DRM.
It boots as far as a login prompt and I can login but the whole system hangs within a few minutes.
This sounds extremely similar to 549476 however I was asked to open a new bug rather than re-open that one.
Adding nomodeset to the boot parameters makes the boot process complete successfully however the splash screen while booting is shown at a strange, low resolution and prompts for passwords aren't really visible.

Hi jpiesing,
If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https:/ /wiki.ubuntu. com/KernelMainl ineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs- upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs- upstream- testing' text. Please let us know your results.
Thanks in advance.
