Ok, after some few hours more of listening, I can report that, if not fixed, the problem is diminished by several orders of magnitude at least.

For clarity, the fix is to install the 2.6.34-lucid kernel from the kernel-ppa's.

I could mark this as solved but I don't know if that's appropriate. Any comments?
