Perhaps of some use is that the ssh server daemon does not respond - the keyboard appears to be frozen (Caps Lock has no effect, brightness and wirless keys have no effect), Ctrl-Alt-F1 etc do not open a console, but Alt-SysReq-REISUB does perform a reboot. I had the ssh server running (and it has started correctly since reboot), but was not available when the computer was frozen - I do not know if it failed to start on resume or stopped.
Perhaps also of some use is my impression that the screen resumes at the brightness I left it when the session is not doomed, but resumes much darker prior to a freeze.
Switching off modeset in Grub does not work.
