I have discovered that if I removed the "splash" in grub and booted, it worked. Then I did:
$ sudo nano /etc/usplash.conf (and changed the screen resolution from 1600x1200 to 1680x1050) and then: $ sudo update-initramfs -u
everything works again.
But I STILL consider this as a bug: The boot process should not hang just because the splash screen cannot be viewed.
