It appears my problem was solved by doing the following:

1) Use nomodeset on installation
2) Use nomodeset on GRUB boot command (removing quiet splash)
3) Upon booting, install the recommended hardware drivers.

Everything seems to work great now. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help get this fixed.
