Martin: The same issue you experience with video=LVDS-1:d was hitting a significant amount of people who's lid status was broken because of a crappy bios, so they could never get the LVDS working with KMS without adding a quirk to the kernel and installing the new kernel.
Out of curiosity, can you please try booting with video=SVIDEO-1:d and see if there is any difference? It seems to be a userspace problem to me. Alternatively, can you try booting with i915.fbpercrtc=1?
