Using Gnome the display does not dim on boot, and "ctrl-alt-f1 ctrl-alt-f7" does not dim the screen. Using KDE it does. The KDE battery monitor screen brightness slider does not work - the brightness always gets set to the lowest setting. So it looks like this may be a powerdevil bug (at least, for myself and the other KDE users reporting here).
