I also have made sure I am allowed to mount FUSE file systems in the permissions dialog. This "not authorized" error appears at random times. It will never clear on its own without a reboot. After rebooting, I may or may not be able to auto-mount an external USB drive. I can always use a "mount" command as root and that succeeds. So this appears to be a problem with the auto-mounter process, whatever that is, and permissions. This is in Ubuntu 10.04. I have seen recommendations to update to the latest Ubuntu. Shouldn't 10.04 be made to work properly, since it is an LTS version?

More information: (1) The problem happens for me in both GNOME and LXDE desktops. (2) An Ubuntu Forums recommendation was to install package "pysdm" to manually mount the USB drives. That works. What doesn't work is automatic mount for the user when plugging in a USB device--"not authorized" pops up. (3) This problem has been occurring for me for at least 6 months, and doesn't seem to be solved by any package updates I download. (I keep my system current with updates.) I was previously running Ubuntu 9.04 and never had any issues at all with auto-mount permission problems.
