OK, decided to give it another go. Here's what I did.
- shutdown the pc
- pull the battery
- pull the AC, leave the charger connected to the pc. light goes out after a couple of seconds
- push the 'on' switch several times (nothing happens, what do you expect...)
- unplug the charger

- fit the battery
- boot the pc
- check dmesg, looking good (well now...)
- connect the charger
- plug charger in AC
- check dmesg, still looking good

Been using it for several hours now, still no real problems. There are some messages in dmesg that look like the ones in my original report, but not the flood is used to be.
Disconnected and reconnected the charger several times from the pc, it stays OK.
Seems that's the solution after all.
