I am also experiencing sporadic problems such as short delays, ls: reading directory .: Input/output errors, system not recognizing the ctrl key on and off.

That is due to the upstream decision not to allow custom EDID aanymore. From what I know, they made the decision due to the ability to destroy hardware based on incorrect information in the EDID.

Thanks!

Not sure if it is the same bug: due to my wireless (RT2860 of ASUS EeePC 1000H) and mixed mode WPA/WPA2 only working with 2.6.33 kernel (not 2.6.32 with or without backport 2.6.34 driver, 2.6.34 or 2.6.35) I use the 2.6.33.5 kernel from the launchpad kernel PPA (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.33.5-lucid/linux-headers-2.6.33-02063305_2.6.33-02063305_all.deb). With this kernel I see messages on the boot screen before Plymouth takes over, saying:

*ERROR* EDID checksum is invalid

similar messages I find in /var/log/kern.log also backups from the beginning of may, where I had either the original 2.6.32 or the first 2.6.33 kernel installed:

Sometimes the log shows only one EDID and different remainders, but same EDID have same remainder. As the display is built in, there should be only one. And it is striking, that xrandr --verbose gives an EDID mostly identical to the first EDID, only differing in byte 125 and 127, where it has 00 instead of ff, and the checksum is 0. So it seems xrandr reports a valid EDID, while libdrm sees a faulty one.

I was experimenting a bit with that as I had seen similar messages on one of my machines when connecting the external monitor through a kvm switch. In my case there seems to be some electrical problems to detect the bus line pulled to 0. Maybe other people affected could try to use one of the kernels at: http://people.canonical.com/~smb/i915-edid-test/ and report back here (best with the dmesg output from the new kernel)?

Manoj,

I am not very confident your patch helps in that case. The upstream bug you mention had a constant error in one part of the EDID blocks that apparently is not important. From the message here the CRC remainder is changing in every message and that indicates rather a problem in the transfer than an incorrect EDID which can be ignored. The errors here are rather random and likely can happen all over the EDID information.

totof1169, go to the URL in Stephan's post, download all the .debs from that location.
Open a terminal window, change directory to the location where you downloaded the .deb pacakges.
use the command sudo dpkg -i *.deb to install those deb packages. reboot, and you should now be running the new kernel.

totof1169,

If you remove the kernel package you installed then you will revert back to the previous kernel as default. Also, can you try the kernel I posted in my last comment and report if that fixes the issue? The kernel I posted has a patch that works around the EDID error report.

I've decided to test 64bits system, after some years beeing afraid by them, due to a bad experience xD

Thus, on my Toshiba portege A600 (Intel Core 2 Duo U9300) I've installed Win 7 Pro 64bits, and just after Lucid 64bits. And I'm facing the same errors (see below).

All was OK at the installation and on first boot. (Win 7 was even correctly recognized ;-) )
Then I installed the French language package, and all goes wrong. Not only I had the "raw edid error", but also Ubuntu refused to start. In recovery mode, I desinstalled the french language package (apt-get remove language-pack-fr), reboot, and all was ok again. Yeah, seems pretty strange... but really, I tried a lot of things, and gdm had never accepted to start. At last, I've rebooted in recovery mode, and the ONLY things I've done is "apt-get remove language-pack-fr" and "reboot", and I didn't had anymore the raw edid errors, and Ubuntu worked fine again.

Then I installed the new kernel (2.6.32-21 -> 2.6.32-23), and again, I have the errors below. Nevertheless, I can start Ubuntu this time, even if it seems quite slow. I'll try the kernel above, and give a feedback.

Such a frustrating thing for the sake of Linux!

I am running Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, fedora 13 and Windows XP pro SP3 on a Dell Inspiron 9400 linked to a Dell ST2310 External Monitor (through VGA and DVI-D).

The DVI-D works fine in Windows XP.

I get the same error message upon booting : Raw edid - Edid checksum is invalid, remainder is 130.

I have an Intel 945GM graphics card!

PS: I ll have to install Ubuntu 9.x and check if it is a matter of Intel drivers or the kernel itself!
