I have an Acer Aspire 7740 with intel integrated graphics. I have this same problem. When the function keys are pressed, Ubuntu Lucid (Beta 2) notification shows that it is dimming or brightening, but the screen brightness does not change. Power Management settings do not change the brightness either. It is always bright.
