The upstream patches are rather intrusive, they aren't really appropriate for SRUing. Mike's patch looks more suitable for an SRU. Has this ever been tested on the maverick package? I prepared a test package for maverick in my SRU test PPA (https://aunchpad.net/~pitti/+archive/sru-test), could someone please install that on an affected system and check whether it works? If so, I'll upload it to maverick-proposed.
