Bug Description

I think that this has something to do with the kernel. I'm using the Ubuntu 2.6.31-19 Kernel. I keep my battery out of the laptop to preserve it. I plugged it in a few days back, and I noticed that Ubuntu won't boot. It either hangs on boot loading screen, or enters the UI and hangs there. When it enters the Gnome UI, I can't move the cursor, nothing responds, I have to forcefully shut it down. One guy had a similar problem, as I found via google (http://<email address hidden>/msg1966386.html), and he solved it by installing (at that time) the newest kernel update. This is very irritating as the battery can't be used at all.

Thanks for help

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in linux.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

I have Toshiba A205-4567S and I can report the same problem not only on Karmic kernel but Lucid too. I even tried to run live Knoppix with kernel 2.6.32-17 but it freezed at the time the desktop started to load. On Hardy no problems at all. For sure this is a kernel bug but I am not very competent how to send a report to the proper developers.

I experience exactly the situation described in this bug.
However, the laptop is a ASUS X51R:

When battery powered, the GUI of Ubuntu freezes (possibly problem with power-management). With AC supply no problem occurs.

Hardware:

Laptop ASUS X51R
CPU Celeron M520
Graphics: ATI Radion Xpress 1100

Ubuntu Versions: 9.10, 10.04 RC (latter from Live-CD)

-Hangup happens when booted shortly after starting up X. Don't get to sign-in dialog.
-If AC power is disconnected after boot up (Gnome active). GUI freezes within seconds.
-[AltGr][SysReq][k] does not get the system responsive again.

Using boot option acpi=off results in booting up and using the system is fine with battery. However power-management functions are not present.

Thanks a lot
Thomas

Yesterday I tested a new release of Xubuntu 10.10 and the bug still exists.
When on battery power my laptop works for a minute or two and then just hangs on.
Reproducible even with live cd.
