This bug, and a variety of other stability related issues, seem to be fixed in Lucid. And, specifically, updating to the Lucid kernel 2.6.32-10 packages also fixes them in Karmic for me.

Note that I still have stability issues when using 2.6.32 mainline from the PPA.
