Jeremy,

Although I would like to help with Ubuntu issues any way I can, I'm
afraid the conditions have changed so much since then, I don't think I
can recreate the actual situation. For one thing there has been a VmWare
update and several Ubuntu online updates since, and I thought that the
problem was with VmPlayer or Windows7 drivers used by VmWare anyway.
Ubuntu 9.10 has not been a problem on 3 different systems since then,
either virtual machines or direct on the metal.

Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.
