Bug Description

Linux bwilson-laptop 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:04:26 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

Description: Ubuntu 9.10
Release: 9.10

I suspended the laptop last night. When I brought it up today, it froze. I expected it to start up without a hitch.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from resuming properly.

Hi all,

Please, can you tell us whether this is still an issue for you?

If so, please, can you include your last karmic kernel (2.6.31-16)?

To do it, just run following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) while running Karmic. It
will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 466868

Thanks in advance

hi

Yep, it is still an issue.
I did as you asked, but I must say I'm not on Karmic anymore.

Suspend/resume and hibernate/resume all worked fine in Jaunty, but broke
when I upgraded to Karmic beta. Never got fixed after Karmic got
released as stable.
Some weeks ago I tried some of the packages in Lucid to see if that
would fix it for me, but no joy.
Right now I've moved to Lucid completely (and enjoying it) but
suspend/resume is still broken. Pretty annoying on a laptop.

Dell Latitude 131L / AMD / amd64 / Lucid on daily updates.
uname -a gives: Linux tom-laptop 2.6.32-10-generic #14-Ubuntu SMP Thu
Jan 7 17:38:08 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Let me know if I can do more to help you of give information.

cheers
Tom

Hi Tom,

I see you are using the wl driver. Just our of curiosity, if you unload that driver prior to suspending, does this help at all?

sudo rmmod wl

You'll then have to reload the module after resuming (assuming you are able to resume successfully). Let us know your results. Thanks.

hi Leann

After upgrading to Karmic I could use the free driver for my Broadcom
wifi card. That means wl is not in use anymore
("sudo rmmod wl" gives output "ERROR: Module wl does not exist in
/proc/modules")

So I think we may conclude that it seems not to be related to wl.

cheers

I'll try to confirm this evening... I've avoided trying to suspend
ever since I went to karmic.

Okay, I just tried to suspend. If computers laugh by starting the
power sequence then stop; then my computer laughed its arse at me.
Suspend is a total bust. I'm willing to help diagnose as a side bar.

OK, today I gave it another try.
When choosing hibernate, the system seems to wind down as you would expect, but just before it should turn off there is a lot of disc activity and I get a straight X login screen (grey, square, not like my Gnome desktop).
It doesn't hang up my pc anymore, but is still not working as desired.

update-
Just loaded my daily dose of updates and guess what? Suspend/resume seems to work now.
Hibernating is still broken though, same as described above. I will check again the coming days and if suspend/resume keeps functioning OK I'll post that as well.
The hibernate/resume issue will be reported in 447192, since they now are obviously not the same (though maybe still related somehow).

@Merovech, can you confirm that it works after last updates.
@Tom: Can you confirm that you have the same hardware as the original bug reporter's one.

Yes, same machine but with bios version 2.4.1 not 2.3.0. I see no other
differences.
Dell Latitude 131L / Turion 64 X2 TL-56 / 1GB / Lucid amd64

No love.

Suspend results in the same: the system boots up, the cooling fan
whirls, and nothing else happens.

On a hunch, I tried a Hibernate; something I never use. That provided
less response. On restart it just blacked the screen and cut out.
There was a "softreset failed' message on initial hibernate.

Suspend and resume work fine, hibernate still comes back just when you think it is about to switch off.
Will x-post in bug 447192 as well.

The Lucid kernel has undergone lots of changes since the last comments in this bug report, not the least of which include a completely new graphics driver stack. Can someone please test and up to date system to determine if this issue is still present?

Thanks

I wish I could, but said changes in the kernel and graphics stack rendered
my system completely foobar due to issues in KMS and ATI cards and
GDM/login.
Last time I checked was about a week ago and suspend / resume worked OK,
but hibernate / resume was still broken. There's another bug for that
though.

Sorry, took me a while. Still having problems; but of a different
sort. System did STANDBY okay. Previously, on restart it would flash a
hard drive light then just sit and spin the CPU fan. Now, it boots up
fine. However, none of the applications work. The window for, say, the
calculator comes up, but the calculator is blank; no controls. When I
told it to reboot, the shutdown timer came up with a blank face. It
did time out, and reboot.

On reboot, the system started a disk scan that failed and dropped to a
diag prompt. I rand FSCK and it found issues on the main partition.
There were numerous orphaned inodes, etc. I believe this occurred
because of the standby, and the graphics problems mentioned above are
symptoms.

For what it's worth; I actually put that laptop on the shelf and did not use it for nearly four months because this issue was such a pain.

Since you're the original reporter, I'm marking this bug as fix released.
