If I turn off all visual effects System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects->None Then the external monitor will work and the laptop doesn't crash.

So this is a problem with the intel driver, compiz and external monitors. I can live without compiz, but it is a bit annoying really. I wouldn't like this as a permanent solution.
