OK... I found this in my syslog:

As these messages indicate, the notebook has a slightly hidden switch (at the side) to enable and disable WLAN - and it works perfectly with Ubuntu... (this is so very, very embarassing indeed ... ) So no problem here. Hopefully, some of the posted links will help nevertheless.
